I would like to show you Chalkie.
I was fostering for a cat shelter and I received several phone calls one day from a worried person about a white stray cat.
It was cold and raining really hard.....
The people told me that the cat had been hanging about for about 6 months. They had a baby and were worried about bringing the cat indoors. They had caved in and fed it in the morning and the cat then hadnt moved all day. It was now sitting in the rain on a blanket they had placed outside.
We had a long chat and it was decided that if I went over and put a flea treatment on the cat, they would let it in until I had a place for it.
So I went over in the dark and rain with no basket but flea and worm treatment.
When we got there the poor cat was sitting on the by now soaked blanket. They allowed me to step in with the cat in my arms to check it over.
I have seen alot of rescue strays but this one will remain with me for ever. He was not really white but pink because he had such a bad skin condition. His ears were just scabs. He was so so skinny I nearly cried.
I made the decision immediately to take him home. So we had no basket but it didnt matter he sat on my lap and looked at me all the way home. I put him in my heated utility room and he had a little to eat and laid down. He slept until the morning. Took him to the vets and they said he had cancerous ears.
I called the person in charge of the cat shelter and told them. They were not happy!!! Said I couldnt just pick up any old cat. This did not make me happy at all. (that whole thing is a different story).
Poor old chalkie had his ears removed and made himself at home with me. I never thought he would have a forever home but a lady who is now a friend offered chalkie a home. So off he went and was very very happy. He filled out his coat was gorgeous he was spoiled rotten ;-)
Unfortunately he developed a cough and me and his new mummy took him to the vet. After several appointments nothing working they did a special test and discovered he had a very rare cancer in his throat (probably from the earlier ear cancer)
We were very very upset he had been off the streets for only 7 months.
He came back to me and I looked after him and gave him every comfort he deserved. His new mummy came every morning to see him (she just couldnt give him the care he needed in his final days). Then came the day that he looked at me and was breathing fast and I knew the time had come.
It broke my heart to take him on his final journey I was with him holding him while he passed over to the bridge.
I am welling up now he really was a special special boy. :'
